National Nutrition Month: Stay Nourished On Any Budget!
National Nutrition Month® is sponsored every March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses on the importance of making healthier food choices and developing wholesome eating habits. This week’s topic focuses on maintaining health and wellness on any budget.
Good news! It is possible to eat healthy and maintain a grocery budget with some planning and smart shopping strategies. Below are some tips to guide you to healthy eating without breaking the bank.
Plan Your Meals
Before heading to the grocery store, plan your meals for the week. This helps you buy only what you need and avoid impulse purchases. Shopping online is also a great way to reduce last minute purchases that may not be on the list.
Buy In Bulk
Purchase staples like rice, beans, lentils, oats, and whole grains in bulk. They are inexpensive and can be used in various meals.
Shop Seasonally
Choose fruits and vegetables that are in season as they tend to be cheaper and fresher. Frozen fruits and vegetables are also a budget-friendly option and preserve their nutrients.
Cook At Home
Eating out can quickly add up. Cooking meals at home allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes. It also increases family time!
Utilize More Affordable Protein Sources
Incorporate plant-based proteins such as beans, lentils, tofu, and eggs into your meals. They are often less expensive than meat and provide essential nutrients.
Compare Prices
Compare prices across different brands and stores. Sometimes generic or store brands can be just as good as name brands, but often more affordable.
Use Leftovers
Get creative with leftovers to minimize food waste. Leftover vegetables can be used in soups, stir-fries, or omelets.
Limit Convenience Foods
Convenience foods like pre-cut fruits and vegetables or individually packaged snacks are convenient but often more expensive. Buying whole fruits and vegetables and portioning out snacks yourself can save money.
Stay Hydrated
Drink water instead of drinks like soda or juice. Not only is water a great option, but it is more affordable.
Take Advantage of Sales and Cupons
Keep an eye out for sales and coupons on healthy items you regularly buy. Stock up when you find a good deal.
Grow Your Own Produce or Visit Your Local Farmer’s Market
If you have space, consider growing some of your own fruits, vegetables, or herbs. It can be a cost-effective way to access fresh produce. By going to the farmer’s market at the end of the market day, you may be able to negotiate deals with vendors.
By implementing even just a few of these strategies, you can eat well on a budget without sacrificing nutrition or flavor!
