My Hemoglobin A1c is Elevated, What Now?

Receiving the diagnosis of Pre-diabetes or Diabetes can feel overwhelming. It can become even more overwhelming if you do a deep dive into the internet and social media to learn how to treat it on your own. We are here to help! Lemond Nutrition has Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) who are experts in teaching patients how to manage and treat elevated blood glucose (BG) through diabetes self-management. While some information may seem scientific or “make sense”, myths and incorrect information may lead not only to continued elevated BG, but longer term health complications.

So, what can you do to help manage your care and risks of complications? Here are seven types of behaviors to help with Diabetes Self-Management, also known as the ADCES7 Self-Care Behaviors®.

  1. Healthy Coping - recognizing emotions that may have a negative effect on BG

  2. Balanced Eating - combining protein and carbohydrates, eating good sources of fiber, as well as making specific adjustments to reduce BG spikes

  3. Being Active - benefits such as lowering BG, blood lipids, and stress or anxiety levels

  4. Taking Medication - following your Physician's orders correctly will help with lowering your risk of diabetes-related complications

  5. Monitoring - regularly checking your BG will help understand what could be causing some lows or highs in your readings

  6. Reducing Risks - working on habits and routines will also help with lowering the risk of long term health complications

  7. Problem Solving - thinking through a plan of how to deal with problems you could face in the future, or learning how to expect the unexpected

Lemond Nutrition has several options for assisting with individualizing and understanding these ADCES7 Self-Care Behaviors® better. Our Freedom Wellness Diabetes Prevention & Management Program is a great place to start! It combines group classes and individual sessions with Registered Dietitians. Best of all, most insurance companies approve the services, including Medicare (Diabetes diagnoses), so it may come at no cost to you.
