Mocha Strawberry Breakfast Smoothie

Smoothies sometimes get a bad reputation for being boring—or worse, nutritionally unbalanced. But this fiber- and protein-packed smoothie is the opposite. Think of it as a little love letter to yourself in a glass. So slow down, enjoy the process, and treat your morning to this chocolate-covered-strawberry, coffee-inspired breakfast.

The best part? It’s not just a snack—it’s a complete meal. That makes it perfect as your first meal of the day or as a satisfying post-workout refuel.

It’s also an excellent source of calcium and iron, helping support bone health, oxygen transport, and overall energy levels.

From a balanced-plate perspective, this smoothie checks all the boxes. A well-balanced meal typically includes:

  • ½ plate non-starchy vegetables or fruits

  • ¼ plate whole grains or other starches

  • ¼ plate lean protein

In smoothie form, this recipe hits those marks in a deliciously creative way:

  • Strawberries provide your serving of fruit (without added sugar)

  • Oatmeal contributes whole-grain carbohydrates for lasting energy

  • Protein powder delivers an efficient serving of lean protein

And let’s talk about the morning motivation: coffee.

A scoop of instant coffee adds about 120 mg of caffeine per serving, which is roughly one-quarter of the recommended daily limit of 400 mg for most healthy adults. That means if you’re not particularly sensitive to caffeine, you can still enjoy your afternoon pick-me-up later in the day.

Trying to cut back but still love that coffee flavor? Simply swap in decaffeinated instant coffee and keep the taste without the extra caffeine.

Quick tip: A typical 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee contains about 95 mg of caffeine, so this smoothie delivers a similar morning boost.

If you’re using a milk alternative, choose one that’s fortified with calcium and vitamin D. While the protein content may be a lower than dairy milk, the smoothie will still provide more than 30 grams of protein, keeping it filling and balanced.

So, if you’re ready to upgrade your breakfast routine, give your blender something exciting to do. This smoothie is rich, energizing, and nutritionally balanced—proof that a smoothie can be anything but boring.

Bonus: Heart healthy because it’s low in saturated fat, has Omega 3s from chia seeds and diabetes friendly because it is within 45-60 grams of carbohydrates, high in protein, and fiber.

Mocha Strawberry Breakfast Smoothie Recipe
Serving: 1 Yield: 16 oz

Ingredients:
3/4 cup nonfat milk*
1 1/4 cup strawberries, fresh
1/4 cup oatmeal
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp instant coffee
1 cup ice

Directions:
1. To a blender, add milk, protein powder, cocoa powder, instant coffee, oatmeal, chia seeds, and ice. Blend until smooth (1-2 minutes).
2. To a 16 oz glass, add strawberries, and puree with a handblender. Coat inside glass with the strawberry pure by tilting and rotating it mindfully.
3. Pour mocha smoothie into glass and enjoy!

Blending the milk, oatmeal, chia seeds, powders and ice first is intentional. While the strawberries are being cut and pureed, the mixture sits for a little bit allowing the starches and soluble fiber to absorb the liquid. The smoothie is thickened without a banana.

If it’s easier for you, use chocolate protein powder. The nutrition profile will be different when it is entered to a food logging app like Cronometer. Having vanilla protein powder and cocoa powder on hand allows flexibility to make different recipes.

Power up your morning in a balanced way!
