Finding Joy In Movement

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, let’s find a way to get our bodies moving this month! We all know exercise has many health benefits- ranging from preventing disease to improving your mood and sleep. In today’s "go, go, go" society it can be really hard for us to find time to move our bodies each day. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week and 2 days of muscle-strengthening activity a week is recommended.

Here are some tips to help you find joy in movement!

  1. Find something you enjoy- Try different fitness classes, exercise routines, or new at-home workouts to find something you truly like to do. If you don't like your exercise routine, the chances are you won't stick with it!
  2. Listen to your body- Rest when you need it! When we don't take the rest our bodies need it can lead to burnout and eventually quitting your movement routine.
  3. Have fun- Try something different...get the family involved, exercise with a friend, listen to your favorite podcast, or blare your music! Find ways to make movement more fun to create a lasting routine.
  4. Make it social- whether it’s inviting a friend to your fitness class with you or playing basketball with your child, having someone to move with usually makes the experience more enjoyable and the time flies by!
